What is Running Calories?
The Running Calories Calculator estimates how many calories you burn while running or jogging. Running is one of the most efficient calorie-burning exercises — a 70 kg person burns approximately 70 calories per kilometer regardless of speed (faster running burns more calories per minute but covers the distance quicker).
The primary factors affecting calorie burn are: body weight (heavier = more calories), distance (more important than speed for total burn), and intensity (MET value). Running at 6:00 min/km has a MET of about 9.8, meaning you burn 9.8 times more calories than at rest.
Comparison: Running burns roughly 2× the calories of walking the same distance. A 5K run burns about 350 calories for a 70 kg person, while walking the same 5K burns about 175 calories.
Formula
Calories = MET × Weight (kg) × Time (hours)
MET values by pace: < 4:00 min/km (15+ km/h): MET 14 (sprinting) 4:00-5:00 min/km: MET 11.5 (fast running) 5:00-6:00 min/km: MET 9.8 (running) 6:00-7:00 min/km: MET 8.3 (jogging) 7:00-8:00 min/km: MET 7 (slow jogging) 8:00-10:00 min/km: MET 5 (brisk walking/jogging) > 10:00 min/km: MET 3.5 (walking)
Example — 70 kg, 5 km at 6:00/km: Time = 5 × 6/60 = 0.5 hours Calories = 9.8 × 70 × 0.5 = 343 Calories/km = 69 Fat equivalent = 343/7.7 = 45g
How to use this Running Calories Calculator?
1. Enter your body weight in kg. 2. Enter the distance you ran/plan to run in km. 3. Enter your pace in minutes per km. 4. See total calories burned, calories per km, MET value, and fat equivalent.
Note: These are gross calories (including BMR). Net calories burned (above resting) are approximately 75-80% of the shown value.
