What is Percentage?

A percentage represents a fraction of 100 and is one of the most universally used mathematical concepts in everyday life. From calculating discounts during Amazon Great Indian Festival to understanding your exam scores, salary hikes, GST rates, mutual fund returns, and inflation — percentages are everywhere.

This calculator instantly answers the three most common percentage questions people ask: (1) What is X% of a number? (2) What is the number after adding X%? (3) What is the number after subtracting X%?

Percentages are fundamental to financial literacy. When your bank says your FD earns 7% interest, or your mutual fund returned 15% CAGR, or the government imposes 18% GST — you are dealing with percentages. Understanding how to calculate them quickly helps you make better financial decisions, compare deals while shopping, negotiate salary hikes, and verify bills.

Formula

The three fundamental percentage formulas:

1. Percentage of a value: Result = Value × Percentage / 100 Example: 20% of ₹5,000 = 5,000 × 20/100 = ₹1,000

2. Percentage increase (add percentage): New Value = Value × (1 + Percentage / 100) Example: ₹5,000 + 20% = 5,000 × 1.20 = ₹6,000

3. Percentage decrease (subtract percentage): New Value = Value × (1 − Percentage / 100) Example: ₹5,000 − 20% = 5,000 × 0.80 = ₹4,000

4. Percentage change between two values: Change% = ((New − Old) / Old) × 100 Example: Price from ₹200 to ₹250 = ((250−200)/200) × 100 = 25% increase

5. Reverse percentage (find original from discounted price): Original = Final Price / (1 − Discount%/100) Example: Price after 20% off is ₹800 → Original = 800/0.80 = ₹1,000

How to use this Percentage Calculator?

1. Enter the Value — the number you want to calculate a percentage of (e.g., ₹5,000). 2. Enter the Percentage — the percent you want to calculate (e.g., 20). 3. Read Results: The calculator shows three answers simultaneously — the percentage amount (₹1,000), the value after adding the percentage (₹6,000), and the value after subtracting (₹4,000).

Common use cases: - Shopping: 'What is 30% off on ₹2,999?' → Enter 2999 and 30 - Salary: 'My ₹50,000 salary gets 15% hike' → Enter 50000 and 15 - Exam: 'I scored 156 out of 200, what percentage?' → (156/200) × 100 = 78% - Tax: '18% GST on ₹10,000' → Enter 10000 and 18

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate percentage increase?
Percentage increase = ((New Value − Old Value) / Old Value) × 100. For example, if a stock went from ₹200 to ₹250, the increase is ((250−200)/200) × 100 = 25%. If your salary went from ₹40,000 to ₹46,000, that's a 15% hike.
What is 15% of 1000?
15% of 1000 = 1000 × 15/100 = 150. Quick mental math tip: 10% of 1000 = 100, 5% = 50, so 15% = 100 + 50 = 150.
How to reverse a percentage?
If a price after 20% discount is ₹800, the original price = 800 / (1 − 0.20) = 800 / 0.80 = ₹1,000. This is useful when you see a 'discounted' price and want to know the original MRP.
How to calculate percentage of marks?
Percentage = (Marks Obtained / Total Marks) × 100. For example, 432 out of 500 = (432/500) × 100 = 86.4%. For CGPA to percentage: multiply CGPA by 9.5 (as per CBSE).
What is the difference between percentage and percentile?
Percentage is your score out of 100. Percentile tells you what percent of people scored below you. Scoring 90 percentile means you scored higher than 90% of test-takers.
How to calculate percentage change in Excel?
In Excel: =(New-Old)/Old and format as percentage. For example, if A1=200 and B1=250, use =(B1-A1)/A1 which gives 0.25 or 25%.
