What is Carbon Footprint?

The Carbon Footprint Calculator estimates your annual greenhouse gas emissions measured in tonnes of CO₂ equivalent. It covers the three biggest sources of personal emissions: electricity use, car travel, and air travel.

The global average carbon footprint is about 4 tonnes CO₂ per person per year. India's average is about 1.9 tonnes, the US is about 16 tonnes, and the UK is about 5.5 tonnes. To limit global warming to 1.5°C, the target is 2 tonnes per person by 2050.

This is a simplified calculator covering the main sources. A complete footprint would also include food (especially meat consumption), heating/cooling, consumer goods, and waste. Diet alone can account for 20-30% of a person's footprint.

Formula

Electricity CO₂ = Monthly kWh × 12 × Grid Emission Factor / 1000 India grid factor: 0.82 kg CO₂/kWh

Driving CO₂ = Annual km × 0.21 kg CO₂/km (average petrol car)

Flights CO₂ ≈ 0.9 tonnes per round-trip (average domestic+international)

Total = Sum of all sources

Example — 300kWh/month, 15,000km/year, 2 flights: Electricity: 300 × 12 × 0.82 / 1000 = 2.95 tonnes Driving: 15,000 × 0.21 / 1000 = 3.15 tonnes Flights: 2 × 0.9 = 1.8 tonnes Total: 7.9 tonnes CO₂/year

How to use this Carbon Footprint Calculator?

1. Enter monthly electricity consumption (check your power bill). 2. Enter annual driving distance in km. 3. Enter number of round-trip flights per year. 4. See your total carbon footprint and breakdown by source.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good carbon footprint?
The global target to prevent catastrophic climate change is 2 tonnes per person by 2050. Currently, global average is ~4 tonnes. Under 5 tonnes is considered low, 5-10 is moderate, over 10 is high.
What has the biggest impact on reducing carbon footprint?
The three biggest reductions: (1) Fly less — one return transatlantic flight = ~1.6 tonnes, (2) Drive less or switch to EV, (3) Switch to renewable electricity. Going vegetarian can save ~0.5-0.8 tonnes/year.
How does India compare globally?
India's average is ~1.9 tonnes per person — among the lowest globally. However, urban Indians with cars and AC may have 5-10+ tonnes. The US average is 16 tonnes, making an average American's footprint 8× that of an average Indian.
